Abstract

Hidayatussalam Shiddiqi, NIT. 50134908.T, 2017, "Crack Analysis of Air Compressor Piston at MT.Dewayani in 2015-2016", Diploma IV Program, Engine Department, Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran Semarang, Supervisor I: H. Aslang M.Pd, M.Mar. E, and Supervisor II: Irma Shinta Dewi, SS, M.Pd. In supporting the shipping at sea the role of air compressor can not be ignored, because its role is quite important in the ship. The objective of the research was to analyze in general the working mechanism of the air compressor, to find out the causes of the piston cracking on the air compressor, to know the appropriate action in handling the problem of the compressor and how to treat it, so it can return to the normal conditions. The research was conducted during the authors implementing “prala” (praktik laut) on MT. Dewayani, by collecting data of the problems that occur on the air compressor on board. The variable is the lack of lubrication due to air compressor's lubrication system is leaking. The results obtained from this research indicate that air compressor’s piston crack is caused by the lack of lubricating oils in the reservoir due to the leaking of lubricating oil packing cover, so there is not enough lube oils which circulated that makes bad lubrication. The suggestion to prevent this problem is to always check the lubrication system on the air compressor before operating it. Keywords: Air compressors, cracks, piston heads, lubricating oil
