Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigated an implementation of the jigsaw technique to teach speaking to students with different speaking anxiety. This study aimed to analyze the levels of foreign language speaking anxiety (FLSA) experienced by the students, to describe how jigsaw was implemented in English class and to investigate the effectiveness of jigsaw technique to teach students with different speaking anxiety. This study employed a mixed-methods approach in the form of exploratory sequential design. The study subjects were 24 EFL fourth-semester undergraduate students of the Port and Shipping Department at Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran (PIP) Semarang. Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety Scale (FLSAS) questionnaire, observation sheets, and pretest and posttest were applied. The findings showed that 54% experienced a moderate level of FLSA, 25% of them experienced a high level of FLSA and the rest 21% experienced a low level of FLSA. The implementation of jigsaw technique has helped the students in promoting their responsibility, improving their depth knowledge and teamwork skills, and lessening their FLSA. The study showed that the jigsaw technique was effective in improving the students’ speaking competences of five categories, namely comprehension, fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation respectively, with the highest significance in comprehension.
